Most boardrooms drown in answers. Very few drown in the right questions.
Here are five questions I, as an Independent Director, ask in nearly every board meeting, and why management rarely asks them on their own.
Q1: “What problem are we solving for the third time this year?” Surfaces recurring issues management has normalised.
Q2: “If our ERP showed this risk six months ago, why didn’t we act?” Tests the system-to-decision linkage.
Q3: “What is the one number that, if it moves 10%, breaks our plan?” Forces sensitivity thinking.
Q4: “Who in this room would lose sleep if this decision went wrong?” Tests true ownership.
Q5: “What are we not discussing today that we should be?” Surfaces the silence.
A board’s value is not in the answers it produces. It’s in the questions it dares to ask.
Which of these questions does your board ask, and which does it avoid?
